Rolex GMT-Master 1675 Caramel Tropical Gilt Chapter Ring Dial PCG Case

The Rolex GMT-Master stands as an icon of elegance and functionality, with a rich heritage dating back to 1954. Its creation was prompted by a request from Pan American Airways (Pan Am), which needed a specialized pilot’s watch capable of tracking two time zones simultaneously. With the rise of intercontinental air travel, Pan Am sought a reliable timekeeping tool for its international flight crews to navigate across multiple time zones.

GMT, short for Greenwich Mean Time, serves as the global reference for timekeeping and plays a crucial role in aviation scheduling. The Rolex GMT-Master introduced a groundbreaking feature: a fourth hand, known as the GMT hand, which completes one full rotation every 24 hours. This hand works in conjunction with a rotating 24-hour bezel, enabling the wearer to read a second time zone alongside the local time shown on the traditional 12-hour display.

This innovative functionality made the GMT-Master an essential companion for globe-trotters and airline professionals alike—allowing them to monitor two time zones simultaneously with both accuracy and ease.

In hand, we have a superb example of the GMT-Master’s second generation: an early Ref. 1675 featuring the sought-after “pointed crown guard” (PCG) case, which remains in excellent condition. The rare fat font insert has aged beautifully, fading from black to a rich chestnut brown.

The true star of the show, however, is the dial. This high-gloss gilt dial features a “chapter ring,” smaller lume plots, and the classic “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” text, with “Swiss” printed at six o’clock. The dial has aged to a stunning full caramel tone—absolutely gorgeous. The Oyster bracelet, Ref. 6636, is spring-loaded and features the super rare so-called “big logo” clasp, stamped 4/59, with end links marked 65. This super warm—but undeniably cool—“Caramelo” has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and is ready for a new chapter in its already storied life.
