Rolex Explorer Gilt Tropical Dial Reference 1016 Full Set

Chocolate brown and a bag full of goodies…

This is maybe one of the most amazing and complete original owner watches that we have ever had the honour of selling. The Explorer story began in 1953 with the successful ascent of Everest by Hilary and Norgay and it has been a constant in the Rolex catalogue ever since. This watch’s story began in 1966 when it was bought by the original owner on the 12th October in Germany. And this guy really loved that watch. How do we know?

Well, the first thing is the fact that he engraved his name and address across both sides of the case ,please take a look at the pictures !The second thing is that he really looked after it, having it serviced and keeping all the timing graphs and even keeping his own handwritten records of his Explorer’s time keeping progress. The watch is stunning with a lovely even case. The dial is beautiful with a deep chocolate tropical colour with all the lume intact. The hands are later tritium ones, but the original hands are also included (albeit the lume lost )– stored for decades in the box. The watch comes with the original Oyster rivet bracelet, a reference 6636 fitted with the correct 58 endlinks with a clasp stamped ‘1 66’. The bracelet is in outstanding condition and could be classed as a collectible in its own right! The full set includes the original box, chronometer paper and punched guarantee papers, sales invoice, five service receipts, plus many notes from watchmakers. The guy tested the timing 35 times in 1966 to 67. This watch has been cherished and loved and now it’s your turn to be its custodian! The watch has been fully serviced by our watchmaker.
